HASS

Wattle Grove Primary School will be celebrating WA Day in week 8. The theme is 'Wander out Yonder' promoting WA locals to take a holiday in their ‘backyard’. Each classroom will be decorating their classroom door that features a location in WA. Our Kindy classroom will be decorating our door from the Perth/Peel region. Over the next two weeks, we will be busy preparing for this wonderful project. We would love our parents and caregivers to be a part of our project. Can you please bring in a family photo that captures yourself and your child out in the Perth or Peel region? Some examples are, Hillarys Boat Harbour, Perth City, Kings Park, Optus Stadium, Fremantle, Elizabeth Quay, Yagan Square and Whiteman Park.

Week Four

A BIG thank you to all the Mums for attending our short but special Mothers Day ‘surprise’ on Thursday and Friday. The children worked very hard for the last three weeks preparing for this special celebration, and your presence made all their efforts worthwhile. It was wonderful to see all the mums and I hope it provided each one with memories to treasure of their child’s first year at school.

Literacy

Over the next three weeks we will be focusing on the initial letter sounds -

Rr as in Robot starts with Rr, Rr, Rr

Cc as in Carrot starts with Cc, Cc, Cc and

Kk as in Kite starts with Kk, Kk, Kk.

Please note that Cc is referred to as ‘curly c’ and Kk as ‘kicking k’

Sight words will be Look, at, Mum.

Numeracy

The children are learning to identify and write numbers 7, 8 and 9. We will also learn to count and order numbers to 9 in the correct order and use one to one correspondence.

This term our theme is “A Home Among The Gum Trees!” and will relate to our country, Australia. We will be learning about our Indigenous Australians, WA and the unique flora and fauna found here. We will use the theme to build the children's vocabulary and knowledge of the country they live in.

News Telling

Starting this week, the children will be asked to bring in something that represents Australia e.g. animals, plants, landmarks, places you might have visited, sport, foods, cultural icons such as thongs or hats with corks etc. to share with the class during show and tell. Please ensure your child is prepared on their rostered news day.

We would like the children to develop the confidence to speak independently without assistance and prompting. Sharing news is a fun way to build oral language and gain confidence in speaking and listening skills. Please practise news and help your child to plan a few sentences about their object. Children are required to speak clearly and loudly and to look at their classmates when sharing their information.

It has been very rewarding to see each child making progress in their learning since the beginning of this year and we are extremely proud of them. It must be noted that each child progresses at their own pace and at their appropriate developmental levels, hence regular support and reinforcement of concepts taught need to be consistent both at school and home. The children are being assessed for mid-year reports that will be issued at the end of this term. Please practise and support your child, so that they can independently and consistently demonstrate their learning.

We look forward to many enjoyable and productive learning experiences ahead.

Week One

Welcome back to another exciting term in Kindy.  It has been lovely to see all the children back at school and settling back into their routines. We have been reviewing the sounds Ss, Aa, Tt, Pp, Ii and Nn as well as the numbers 1-5.

Literacy

Our letter for next week is the ‘Mm’ phonic sound. We are focusing on the short initial sound only, as in Mum and mop.

This term we are learning some new concepts, including syllables. Syllables are the parts of the word and we count syllables by touching our heads, shoulders and stomach. Eg. Ba-na-na = 1st syllable – touch head, 2nd syllable – touch shoulders and 3rd syllable – touch tummy.

We are also learning to read sight words. We have been looking at photos of ourselves and reading.  I am {name}. I am a boy/girl. Sight words covered this year are I, am, a, look, Mum.

Numeracy

Next week we are learning about the number 6. The children will continue focusing on the collection of dots on a dice, without counting. They will also practise to orally count in order starting at one and counting collections.

Mother’s Day Activities

Kindy children have started working on some special Mother’s Day projects. They are very excited about what they are creating!

Student Teacher

Miss Ellie Shenton is working with Blue and Red Group in Room 1. She will be in our classroom completing her final professional practice. We are enjoying working with Miss Shenton. She will be in Room 1 until the end of Week 8, Term 2.

We are looking forward to another busy and exciting term.

Week Ten

It is hard to believe that it is already week 10 of Term 3! It has been an extremely busy term and all our children have worked really hard....
