Harmony Day - Blue and Red Group

End of Term One Information

As Term One comes to an end, we would like to congratulate the children and their families on a wonderful start to the school year. The children have come a long way in such a short period of time. Please continue to support your child through home practise in the holidays. A few minutes each day can really make a big difference in supporting your child to retain the concepts taught at school this term.

Literacy

Sounds learnt in Term One:

Aa as in apple

Ss as in snake

Tt as in tap

Pp as in pepper

Ii as in igloo

Nn as in night

Holiday revision ideas:

·      Finding things that start with these initial sounds when at home or out and about. Eye Spy is a fun family game that’s great during a car trip. E.g. “I spy with my little eye something that starts with Ss”

·      Practising writing letters, with correct formation, using crayons, textas or paint

·      Reading books together – spotting letters they recognise in the text

Reading

The students have loved reading and discussing a range of books at school this term.  We have been learning about some of the parts of a book, such as the cover, title and author, and also how to track the words left to right when reading.  We have used clues from the pictures to predict what might happen in the story.

We would like to encourage you to read to your child each day.  Local libraries are a great place to visit and borrow books from. Reading aloud has many benefits for your child’s overall learning and development.  Talk to your child about the story, and ask them questions to develop their ability to understand the text.

When reading a book you can:

·      Ask your child to predict what the story is going to be about by looking only at the cover.

·      Ask your child how a character is feeling and why.

·    Make connections between the book and your child’s experiences. For example, if the story is about a holiday, talk about a holiday that your child may have had and any similarities/differences compared to the text.

·      Expand your child’s vocabulary by talking about any unfamiliar words you read and what they mean.

·      Ask your child to tell you the story of their favourite book. Encourage them to turn the pages as they tell you what’s happening by looking at the pictures.

Numeracy

In week eight, we are revising the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.  We will be practising how to accurately count objects and identify that the last number counted tells us how many. We are also learning to line the numbers up, in the right order, to make a number line.

Fundamental Movement Skills

In Kindy, we teach and practise a variety of gross motor skills. These skills provide a foundation for movement and support children’s ability to participate in a range of physical activities with skill and confidence. Young children love to move and these skills are easily practised through games and active outdoor play.

The autumn holidays provide a great opportunity to spend time outdoors in the cooler weather. Incorporating movements such as hopping, jumping, balancing on one leg, bouncing and catching balls and running into outdoor play supports your child’s confidence in movement.

Thanks again for a wonderful start to the year.

Have a happy and safe holiday break. We look forward to seeing everyone again in Term Two.

Week Five

A special thanks to all parents for their quick response in bringing in all permission forms, notes and family photos.  If you have not returned photo permissions, we encourage you to return them. We can then begin posting photos of all the wonderful activities in Kindergarten.

Literacy

We are learning to write our name, to hold our pencil correctly and to push down with strength. Please continue with practising at home on their placemats that were given out during the Parent information session. These are written in the font that Wattle Grove follows.

Over the next three weeks the children will be learning one initial letter sound per week. They are as follows: Pp, Nn, Ii.

We are looking forward to the children’s ‘Pp’ dress up day this Thursday/Friday the 11th and 12th March.

Focus is on the initial phonic sound NOT the letter name. To reinforce letter sounds please have a look around your home for an object that starts with one of these letters and bring it in to add to our class ‘Phonic Table.’ (Please label items so that they can be returned).

Try the website www.starfall.com for learning the initial alphabet sounds.

Numeracy

We are learning to identify the written numerals 4 and 5, and reviewing all numerals 1-5. By matching concrete objects using one to one correspondence. The children are also learning to touch count each object only once when counting “How many?” We are also learning to recognise 2D shapes and colours.

Please remember -

Homework folders

Library books and bags

Canteen days are Wednesday and Thursday

Assembly

The next Junior Assembly will be held on Friday 19 March. A couple of children from each Kindy group will receive Merit Awards at these assemblies. Parents of these children will be notified and are encouraged to attend, especially if it is not their rostered Kindy day. Children wear school uniform and sit with their class.

Week Three

This has been a busy week for the Kindergarten children. They have started to work in teams and rotate through activities. The children have done an excellent job and need to be commended for their efforts.

A special thanks to all parents for their quick response to notes sent home and for taking the time to attend our Kindy Information Session.

Assembly

Today was our first Junior Assembly. A couple of students from each Kindy group will receive merit awards at these assemblies. Parents of these children will be notified and are encouraged to attend, especially if it is not their rostered Kindy day. Children wear school uniform and sit with their class.

Literacy

We are learning to recognise our name, this includes finding our name tag on our bag hook, finding our names inside the classroom, and playing name games during our mat sessions. They have also been learning the initial sound their name starts with e.g. Andrew starts with A A A. Please help your child to practise writing their name on their placemats, that were given out during the Parent information session. These are written in the font that Wattle Grove follows.

Over the next three weeks the students will be learning one initial letter sound per week. They are as follows:

Apple starts with Aa - Aa – Aa (already taught)

Snake starts with Ss - Ss - Ss.

Turtle starts with Tt - Tt – Tt.

Focus is on the initial phonic sound, NOT the letter name.

Numeracy

We are learning to identify the written numerals 1 (completed) to 3 and matching concrete objects using one to one correspondence. The children are also learning to touch count each object only once when counting “How many?”

Science

To link with our theme for first term “I Am Special” the focus for science will be our five senses. We will be exploring how our senses help us live, learn, identify and interact with the world around using the sense of sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell. Senses are also very important to our well-being. Children will be involved in investigations using their senses.

Health (Changing Health Acting Together)

This term children will be learning about pedestrian safety. For example, knowing how to cross the road safely and understanding what various road signs and signals mean. Next week, we will be outside in our outdoor play area practicing how to cross the road safely using our road mats and signs and using our helmets when riding our bikes.

HASS

Thank you once again to the families who have already brought in their family photos. Students will use these for a Speaking and Listening task. The children are very excited to tell their friends and teachers all about their family.

We look forward to getting to know everyone better and having fun learning together!

Week Ten

It is hard to believe that it is already week 10 of Term 3! It has been an extremely busy term and all our children have worked really hard....
